Who Are They ?

Costume designers are responsible for creating the look of every character based on designing the clothing and accessories they will need in performance. This is depending on the style and complexity of the character in the script. Costume designers also have to create the mood by visualising what part the character plays in the script and presenting it in the clothes that they wear.

What Do They Do ?

Costume designers design their costumes by researching and purchasing the materials needed to design the piece of clothing, sewing, measuring, they are also responsible for designing the accessories and props which help to define each character . Costume designers are known for their skills, for example their creativity and imagination, designing skills, good communication, leadership ability, organisation, time management, budget awareness, good eye for detail and finally the ability to work under pressure and meet the expected deadlines.

How To Become One ?

To become a costume designer it is compulsory to have earnt  a degree or certificate in fashion design, no formal education is required however you must have the key skills such as being artistic and detail orientated. It is important they have a clear understanding of film production as there will be different scenarios and cultures for the designers to manufacture the right piece of clothing.     



How Much Do They Earn ?

The starting salary for a qualified costume designer in the UK starts at around £16,000 to £18,000 per year, further experiences designers tend to earn £20,000 to £40,000 a year which is more desirable. On an average costume designers earn an hourly wage of £10:37. Salary’s start at £7:74 and go up to £23:79 per hour

A costume designer is an individual in charge of designing the clothing worn by actors in a film or stage production. Costume designers aren't specifically just for actors and stage production they can also be working on different costumes for different things such as fashion shows. Costume designers are responsible for creating the look of every character based on designing the clothing and accessories they will need in performances, this is depending on the style and complexity of the character in the script.
